Please always try the latest version (1.4.22 in this case) first. And maybe also for PHP.

The strace shows spinning on poll() for read events, but then ioctl() finding 0 bytes ready to read.
I believe this was fixed a long time ago, but please update here if that is not the case and you still see issues with latest lighttpd release.
