Installing lighty without root access
Added by freon27 about 16 years ago
Hi,
I'm looking at installing lighty to sit beside an apache server installed under a non-root user. Am I able to install it without root access (I'd seem some forum posts that seemed to indicate it might be a problem)?
Thanks

Perhaps I've not asked my question in a way that will get an answer here - If so apologies.
I haven't tried installing lighthttpd yet but we have an AIX system to which we can't get a root password. I've read through the installation guides and they all seem to require root/sudo. Has anyone got any experience of getting around this requirement?
Thanks

Hi,
to build/install lighttpd you need access to use a compiler, and have permission to write to your install prefix/directories (ie: ./configure --prefix=/home/freon/local/).
However, you will not be able to make lighttpd listen to port 80, since this port is privileged.

That's great thanks. We use a non-standard https port for the whole site so I guess we'll be ok to use that without root. I guess that's why we're using it in the first place.
Cheers for the help
