Description

I downloaded the tar file for lighttpd 1.4.76 from lighttpd site and unzipped and built the lighttpd binary.
I loaded the lighttpd binary and associated *.so files and config file in proper locations.
When starting the lighttpd binary from an SSH putty shell I get the following error:
./lighttpd: line 1: syntax error: unexpected ")"
I also get the same error when trying the same process above for version 1.4.65, so it appears it is an operator error on my part. I'm trying to avoid getting a full blown package to avoid updating the kernel, etc... just want to update lighttpd from version 1.4.55 to 1.4.76

Then leave this site and go post on the forums of whatever poorly-maintained OS distro you are using. You clearly are guessing how to update software. And this response is because you are posting a user-question to the lighttpd issue tracker, which is for issues in lighttpd, not for users do not know what they are doing. Your post is not a bug in lighttpd, yet you filed this as a bug.
