ssl + shared lib

Hi,
What's the correct configuration if I want to enable ssl but I do not want to compile ssl into the lighttpd executable?
Since I already have a shared ssl lib I want to use that instead of including ssl into the lighttpd executable. However, http://redmine.lighttpd.net/wiki/1/Docs:SSL states that "To use SSL you must have ssl compiled into lighty." Is this really true? Does this mean that it's not possible to use a ssl shared lib from lighttpd?
I'm using lighttpd-1.4.28 and cross-compiling for an embedded device.
