After upgrade non-fastcgi scripts don't log to error.log
Added by eudlawil almost 2 years ago
- Issue
Hi - We recently upgraded to version 1.4.20 to hopefully deal with some very odd cookie issues we are having.
We have a few perl scripts - one of which runs under mod fastcgi - the others just straight lightty.
After the upgrade, I noticed that the non-fastcgi scripts no longer log warnings/errors to the errorlog.
I have a simple script that just prints the environmental variables to the web page - at the start of the
script I do a warn("HELLO"); - this does not log to the error.log - however similar warns in the fastcgi enabled
cgi do log to error.log. This worked under 1.4.19.
The accesslog isn't apparently affected - non fastcgi and fastcgi enabled scripts log accesses fine.
When upgrading I made no changes to the lighttpd.conf file. - confused ** Thanks for any help you can provide.

RE: After upgrade non-fastcgi scripts don't log to error.log - Added by eudlawil almost 2 years ago
Me again...
Some additional info:
- I back rev'd to 1.4.19 and this issue disappears.
- After upgrading to 1.4.20 - issue returns.
- I simplified things a bit on our dev machine - installing a vanilla lighttpd.conf that has no fastcgi in it. This conf is from the sample provided on the lighttpd wiki. I just added mod_alias support, and mod_cgi support with cgi.assign settings. Still no warns go to error.log. (see attached)
- lightty start stop messages do go to error.log
- when installing I used the following configure command:
./configure --with-openssl --with-pcre --disable-ipv6 --with-PACKAGE=mod_redirect --with-rewrite --with-redirect --with-ssi --enable-fastcgi --enable-discard-path --enable-force-cgi-redirect --without-bzip2
Here's the conf I used in this simplified test:
# lighttpd configuration file
#
# use it as a base for lighttpd 1.0.0 and above
#
# $Id: lighttpd.conf,v 1.7 2004/11/03 22:26:05 weigon Exp $

RE: After upgrade non-fastcgi scripts don't log to error.log - Added by stbuehler almost 2 years ago
Only one process should write to a file at a time, and therefore we now close stderr for all forked applications. I recommend using a wrapper script which redirects the stderr output to an extra logfile, i.e. (not tested):
#!/bin/sh exec /path/to/real/cgi -perhaps -extra -params $@ 2> /your/log/file
RE: After upgrade non-fastcgi scripts don't log to error.log - Added by eudlawil almost 2 years ago
Thanks, stbuehler, for the quick reply!
However, I have to say that I don't understand it.
First off, why did this work in 1.4.19? We had eight lightty fastcgi perl instances (processes)
which logged to the error log as well as a host of other standard cgis.
Was this ability for all cgis to log to the errorlog a broken "feature" that was fixed
in version 1.4.20?
I also don't understand why I can't get the vanilla config with the new version to
log to the error log. You say "Only one process should write to a file at a time". In my
second approach I've removed the fastcgi server from the config and have a super simple
config and I'm just running one standard cgi, yet I still can't get warnings or errors to log
to the errorlog. However, the accesslog works fine.
Server start/stops are logged to the error log. I originally thought it has something to do
with the interaction with fastcgi. But this config doesn't have that... it should work.
I must be doing something wrong.
RE: After upgrade non-fastcgi scripts don't log to error.log - Added by stbuehler almost 2 years ago
- we only want the webserver to write to the errorlog, nobody else (if you are using server.max-worker you may get problems with this)
- fastcgi has an "error" stream; the errors from this stream are logged by lighty
- in 1.4.19 cgi apps wrote directly to the webservers error log. this is bad and was therefore fixed (2> /dev/null)
atm i am working on a patch to read the cgi error stream over a pipe in lighty and log it from there, but there are some problems with the mod_cgi handling. - in 1.5 the cgi stderr is already handled correctly with pipes
RE: After upgrade non-fastcgi scripts don't log to error.log - Added by eudlawil almost 2 years ago
Thanks for the explanation - I guess I was so used to the way apache the the older version of lighty handled this.
I solved my issue by using perl's CGI::Carp module, redirecting STDERR to a separate error.log.
However, it appears I still have the initial issue that caused me to upgrade, where cookie data is occasionally getting written partially. I'll write a separate support request addressing this, in case you have any ideas.
Thanks again. -Lisa
