Following Tutorial: Can't bind to port: 80 Permission denied

Added by pixeljuggler over 16 years ago

I'm a really new lighty user and have run into a problem. I'm trying to install it on my mac which is just freshly purchased for my dissertation, leopard 10.5.6, the newest version of lighty and am using the following tutorial to install:

http://davidwinter.me.uk/articles/2008/11/22/php5-lighttpd-and-imagick-on-mac-os-x-leopard/

At the end of the tutorial (step 11) I keep getting this error: can't bind to port: 80 Permission denied when I try to run the following command:

lighttpd -f /opt/local/etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf -D

I have a hunch that it is the conf file at fault but really I wouldn't know how to remedy. Another thought I had is that perhaps something else is using the port but again I wouldn't know how to find out.

Any help would be fantastic.

I have attached my conf file just in case.

lighttpd.conf (11.5 KB) lighttpd.conf lighty conf file

Maybe only administrators can start apps that bind to ports below 1024...

Thanks for replying Olaf-van-der-Spek. Yeah I am the admin so it should do the job, I think the issue lies somewhere else...

i think on the mac, i am not sure, you need to be root to do this not just an admin user.
