Roadmap
Added by John_P almost 2 years ago
Apologies in advance if I'm just being a bit dense or if I am missing something, but I am really having trouble with following the Lighttpd roadmap.
Mostly because there doesn't seem to be any future issues, targets, or well anything really.
1.4.70 and 1.4.xx have a few items and they are all seemingly closed, then there is 1.5 which also seems to have everything closed, and then there is Lighttpd 2 which seems to have active development at the same time but does not have a roadmap at all as far as I can see.
So I guess I basically have three questions:
- Are there more planned releases under 1.4.x or will the next release be 1.5?
- What is the plan/schedule with 2.0 which presumably will arrive at some point, and what are the major changes between 1.x and 2.x?
- Is there anywhere that we can see a more complete and long-term roadmap than just the issues that are being addressed for the next release?
I know that's a lot of questions, and I appreciate that there isn't a lot of community involvement in this forum so maybe public roadmaps just aren't something that you want to invest a lot of time into. But to explain why I'm asking, I'm part of a project that is planning to use Lighttpd and it would be really nice to be able to see the future direction before we make major decisions.

- 1.4.x is the main and active branch, maintained by gstrauss.
- 1.5 is dead. Won't be released, no development.
- 2.0 was supposed to replace 1.4.x (same as 1.5 ...), but that plan has been abandoned many years ago. While I still run it myself (because I really like the new config syntax), I don't enjoy coding in C anymore and have neither time nor motivation to properly support it. So there won't be any releases.
I'll leave the 1.4.x roadmap got gstrauss :)

It seems that you are confused about things that do not exist, but that you have projected (against what evidence?) and are confused by what you have projected.
If you look at https://git.lighttpd.net/lighttpd/, there is no lighttpd1.5
If you look at the lighttpd source tree, there is no lighttpd-1.5.x branch
If you search the lighttpd wiki on this site, you will find the word "abandoned" next to most references to lighttpd 1.5.
I am not sure what evidence you used to conclude that 1.5 was being actively worked on. It does not seem to me to be an evidence-based conclusion.
so maybe [...] just aren't something that you want to invest a lot of time into.
Please review your questions and perhaps reduce and refine them. Speaking of time, I prefer not to spend my time dismissing wild guesses one-by-one.
Q: Is there a published lighttpd roadmap besides these?

A: No.

Thank you both for the clarification.
I do think that @gstrauss you misread one of my comments slightly.
I am not sure what evidence you used to conclude that 1.5 was being actively worked on. It does not seem to me to be an evidence-based conclusion.
I never actually said that it looked like 1.5 was being actively worked on, I said it about 2.0 and it was based on the fact that both the repo here and on GitHub showed commits within the last two months.
It seems that you are confused about things that do not exist, but that you have projected (against what evidence?)
The thought that 1.5 may exist and be released was based on this page: https://redmine.lighttpd.net/versions/3 which just shows it as closed and with all issues closed, rather than "abandoned".
Again, thanks for the clarifications.

I updated the description at https://redmine.lighttpd.net/versions/3
Where did you find that page linked?

Where did you find that page linked?
I genuinely don't know anymore, I had a lot of tabs open at the same time doing research.
Thank you for updating the page though, it makes it all a lot clearer.

@stbuehler: please update the description at https://redmine.lighttpd.net/projects/lighttpd2
It seems to me that non-technical project managers who draw conclusions from very project-manager-specific searches might find that useful.
